Project Aries

Aries is a personal 3Cs design self study I’ve been developing in Unreal Engine 5 since 2022 to create my ideal character control system that is both fun and fluid. Inspired by games like Dark Souls 3, Breath of the Wild, and The Witcher 3, my goal was to achieve an industry-standard character experience by learning as much as I could about the various complex systems behind a AAA character controller. I have designed and scripted each feature, including advanced directional combat movement, camera controls, combat states, enemy AI, and more!

The most exciting part of the project to me is the magic stance system, which takes inspiration from a combination of mechanics from Dark Souls and The Witcher! This system allows the player to select a magic type and assume a weapon stance that activates a special attack unique to the magic type. For future iterations, I aim to flesh out the magic stance system so that combat gameplay is more influenced by a player's preferred playstyle.
